ORIGINAL CONCEPT:
The world revolving around the player is that of the Mayan vision of hell, as narrated in the Popol Vuh.
The two main characters are Hunahpu and Xbalanque, who we changed to be brother and sister. Originally, the player was supposed to control tiny human characters, to make the rooms appear even bigger, but this particular aspect was later modified.
ARTISTIC STYLE:

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Our first intention was to put the player ill-at-ease. As such, the first decision to use "chibi-like" characters took away from the macabre and sick we wanted to relay. The decision to represent the characters with masks came from the fact that, in Mayan beliefs, putting a mask on the face of a dead person would protect them in the afterlife.
Seeing as the space in which the player moves is orthonormal, we could not make use of perspective and depth. As such, we had to make the background interesting another way, as per time limitation, we wouldn't have the time to make different ones for each room. And since the size of the room is limited to the size of the screen, it was not possible to drastically change the size of the different assets either.
